Face Mask/Face Covering FAQ
No, persons exercising outdoors, or while walking or exercising with other persons of the same household, are not required to wear face coverings as long as physical distancing of 6 feet from others is maintained. People are not expected to wear a face covering while swimming. Physical distancing should be adhered to as much as possible in pool settings.
Face coverings are not required for people participating in organized group or team sports, exercise or other physical activities where it is not practicable or feasible to wear a face covering or physically distance.
Face coverings are required for anyone not participating (such as parents and coaches) who cannot maintain at least 6 feet distance from others with whom they are not closely associated.
Yes – the emergency order applies to everyone in Avondale. The science is unclear on whether someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 and recovered can still transmit the virus to others. CDC recommends continuing to practice everyday preventive actions – including covering nose and mouth when around others – even after one has had the virus and recovered.
Face coverings are not required while engaged in exercise unless it is impossible to maintain physical distancing of at least six feet from others.
Face coverings are required elsewhere in gyms and exercise facilities such as dance and yoga studios when distancing cannot be maintained and in common areas and locker rooms.
The order is effective until repeal or revised by the Mayor.
Any business whose employees cannot observe physical distancing, must require face coverings; including those that interact with the public. Businesses also have the right to refuse service to anyone not wearing a face covering – with the following exceptions:
Exceptions to the mask requirement are provided for anyone who falls into the CDC’s guidance for those who should not wear face coverings due to a medical or mental health condition or developmental disability. People do not have to produce documentation of their condition.
Businesses should first ask customers to comply – to put their mask on. If the customer does not put a mask on, the customer should be asked to leave.
Businesses should not refuse service to someone based on religious or medical conditions. They should allow them in without a mask. Businesses have the right to refuse service to someone who refuses to wear a mask, and doesn’t fit into one of the exceptions. If the customer refuses, contact the police for assistance (please use the non-emergency line: unless immediate response is required).
People working outside while following CDC guidelines and adhering to physical distancing of 6 feet do not need to wear the mask.
An exception is allowed for people who are eating or drinking at restaurants or similar businesses, provided they are seated at their table or other designated eating area.
Face coverings are required for people working in typical office, medical office, retail, restaurant and other business settings.
Face coverings are required any time one is in a public setting or will be in contact with other individuals with whom they are not closely and frequently associated (such members of the same household). Face coverings are required of employees and customers in all retail establishments, convenience stores, grocery stores, pharmacies, medical offices, gyms, indoor sports or activity facilities, and public transit.

Shop with a Cop Program
Avondale’s annual Shop With A Cop program is dedicated to creating a wonderful holiday experience for children who have been victims of a crime. The Avondale Police Department is asking for donations from the community to keep this tradition strong.
“Shop With A Cop is a way for Avondale law enforcement officers to bring holiday cheer into the lives of some children. It also is another way of giving back to the community we care so much about and do our best to protect,” said Melisa Urtuzuastegui, Avondale Police Department Community Services Advocate. “The Avondale Police Department is asking for your help to keep this program going strong, through
community partnerships or donations towards this program.”
For years, the Avondale Police Department has been able to provide an experience for children, who have been victims or witnesses of crime, to shop at the local retail store for the holidays. Often a child will buy presents for everyone in the family, but have to be coaxed by the officer to purchase a present for themselves. It is a very positive experience not only for children involved, but for the officers, who share their special day with them. The children also get to meet Santa Claus and eat a healthy breakfast before they go shopping.
The Avondale Police Department is accepting donations for the Shop With A Cop program throughout the year. The City is also looking for business partners to assist with providing Christmas themed goody bags and food/beverages for the day of the event. For more information or to donate please call 623-333-7219, or email murtuzuastegui@avondaleaz.gov.
